As student debt in America spirals to its highest levels ever, the goal of the new documentary is to liberate the next generation of young Americans by showing them that there is a better and cheaper way to achieve their educational goals.

According to the latest figures on the student debt crisis in the US, in 2022, Americans owe $1.75 trillion in student loans, a sum that increases by $100 billion every year. CCHR is Hosting a Series of Educational Webinars on the Mental Health Law

In order to better protect mental health human rights, the Florida chapter of the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), is hosting two complimentary webinars on the mental health law in June. The webinars will cover the subject of involuntary examination in Florida, called a Baker Act.

The first online event is being held on July 9th from 1:00pm-2:30pm. This webinar will be delivered by attorney Carmen Miller. Mrs. Miller held the position of Assistant Public Defender in the Thirteenth Circuit for many years in Tampa, and is now in the private sector specializing in cases of those who are involuntarily committed under the Baker Act. This webinar is designed to provide mental health providers with a better understanding of the Baker Act including its history, use, impact on human rights and actions to take while protecting vulnerable persons and their rights. The general public is also invited to attend.

Specific Learning Objectives will include:

1. Understand the legal context and intentions of the Baker Act.

2. Be able to describe the laws regarding involuntary examinations.

3. Be able to identify the basic human rights impacted by the Baker Act and the Act’s unintended consequences.

4. Obtain action steps to protect yourself, your children, and all those impacted by the Baker Act.

Titled “Foster Children & The Baker Act”, the second webinar will be held on July 30th from 12:30pm-2:00pm. This online event is being held to raise awareness and Case Workers, Guardian Ad Litem, caregivers and foster parents, are all invited to join the conversation about the flaws in the foster care system and how many of these children end up being sent for involuntary psychiatric examinations, called a Baker Act.

Specific Learning Objectives will include:

1. What foster children experience when they are thrown into the system and how this relates to the the parents, guardians and caregivers.

2. Basic rights which are impacted by the foster care system.

3. How the Baker Act is applied to foster kids.

4. What steps can be taken to better protect these children from abuse.

New Research: The Hiring Gender Gap Is Bigger for Senior Tech Jobs

According to research firm Datapeople, the hiring gender gap is wider for senior tech jobs than it is for junior or mid-level tech jobs.

It’s no secret that women in tech face obstacles, given that it’s a historically male-dominated industry. Pay inequality (that gets exacerbated any time a woman leaves the workforce) is one. But getting through the door is another, illustrated by low female representation in tech applicant pools.

New research from Datapeople shows that applicant pools for tech jobs at the highest levels have diminished female representation. And while employers have worked to improve the representation of women in tech, applicant pools are still predominantly male.

Datapeople’s science team recently analyzed job listings data from over 10,000 U.S.-based employers and found that men account for 67% of applicants to tech jobs. Women aren’t represented proportionally in tech applicant pools, despite earning over half of all degrees in science, tech, engineering, and math. Software engineering pools, for example, have a mere 19% female representation. Meanwhile, information technology and technology infrastructure have even smaller percentages.

Datapeople found that applicant pools for cross-functional jobs like product management, project management, and data tend to have the highest female representation (about 63%). Also, pools for user interface/user experience (UI/UX) design, quality assurance (QA), and enterprise resource planning (ERP) have higher female representation (about 38%).

According to Datapeople, men represent about 65% of applicant pools for junior jobs (typically requiring fewer than four years of experience). But they represent 72% of applicant pools for senior jobs (typically requiring more than 10 years of experience). Female representation in tech job applicant pools is highest for junior jobs. It drops for mid-level jobs and then drops again for senior-level jobs.

For most software engineering jobs, according to Datapeople, female representation in applicant pools drops 25% between junior and mid-level jobs (four to 10 years of experience). For ERP, UI/UX design, and cross-functional jobs, female representation drops at the senior level.
